Mondays, for most people the start of the workweek. And we all heard about Blue Monday, and this is not a myth. From a nationwide registry study of 156 000 people of the Swedish population (in the database Swedeheart) they also had several findings to support this. The daily incidence rate of heart attacks was 11 percent higher on Mondays than on control days, which the researchers defined as Tuesdays through Fridays.
So let’s do this differently! Use the Monday how you want to use it. For some, it’s socializing and connecting with colleagues. For others, it’s using the time to walk through and prepare for their weekly planning. And some just want to use it as focus hours to boost productivity.
What steps to take for the practice
How to change this!
Start blocking your own calendar on Monday morning up until 11 or 12 o clock.
Communicate this with your direct colleagues, for example: ‘I’m struggling with the start of the week, I always feel rushed and want to try something new to change this. I will block my agenda for the coming 4 Monday’s, so I don’t have any meetings on Monday mornings. Of course, you can meet with me if there is absolutely no other way. However, I would really appreciate it if you could help me with this.
How about your manager? Depending on your relationship, start with your manager first, or last. Sometimes it’s better to ask for forgiveness instead of permission. Just start doing this and make sure to be aware of the effect it has on you and your manager. So, if asked you are already prepared to clearly communicate why you did it and what the effect is.
Probably you experience more prepared and effective meetings, higher productivity, and a less stressful start of the week.
Evaluate this after a few weeks and suggest that your direct colleagues block their calendars as well.
slowly spread this same approach to your other teams, like a project team you are part of or a management team.
And before you know it, Monday morning changed!
Less stressful start of the week
Better prepared and effective meetings
More collaboration due to more personal connection
