Studies show that when people feel recognized by their colleagues, they are automatically more involved and productive in the work environment.
Showing someone that he/she is seen and that their presence and/or work is appreciated is really important, but often not shown.
Let's change that with a simple exercise. Do you remember chain letters from your younger years? Well, it's that easy. The lucky catch: if you do this exercise you, and others, will be very happy within 7 days.
What steps to take for the practice
Follow these steps:
Grap a piece of paper or post-it
Think of a colleague who can use, or deserves a compliment
Think again whether this person is not in your comfort zone! Choose somebody who you maybe would forget more easily
Write a simple, but genuine compliment on the paper/post-it and draw something nice to make it more fun.
Sign it with your name (or anonymously) and ask the person to do the same for somebody else with this easy message: Who do you think could also use a compliment? Will you help me create a chain of compliments?
Stick/Put it on the receivers computer/desk/coffee mug and hope he/she will like your compliment. And of course, hope she/he will pay it forward!
A chain of compliments will be created in which people show honest, constructive feedback. It's fun, it's surprising and it will create a trustworthy environment.
